Opened in 1999, our museum incorporates a time
line and period exhibits. Before the official beginnings
of county government there were Indians and squatters
occupying the land. . These gave way to a tide of Civil
War veterans moving in to settle the land at the same
time the giant green pine timber harvest was taking
place. Full-scale agriculture and tourism followed.
The rich and varied experiences of settlers and
developers, scoundrels and criminals, heroes and back
breaking toil is told by relating their stories to specific
individuals. Two furnished period rooms dramatically
depict daily life long ago.
